*** IMPORTANT DATES ***
Paper Submission: April 1, 2021
Notification of acceptance: June 1, 2021
Camera-ready copies due: June 30, 2021
Workshop date: September 27-30, 2021

*** PUBLICATION ***
The workshop papers will be published by Springer in "Communications in Computer and Information Science."
Best papers of the workshop, after further revisions and independent reviews, will be considered for publication in a special issue  of a renowned journal.

*** SCOPE ***
This first DEXA workshop on AI system engineering aims at a holistic view addressing the increasing need of interconnecting traditionally separated disciplines such as data analysis, model building and selection, software engineering, deployment, legal aspects, and standards.
By this holistic view we encounter a variety of challenges along the AI modeling cycle and software system engineering lifecycle
as outlined in the figure below such as:
• theory-practice gap in machine learning with impact on stability, reproducibility or integrity due to  limitations of nowadays theoretical foundations in statistical learning theory or lack of control of high-dimensionality effects of deep learning;
• facing computational constraints, e.g. embedded systems, neuromorphic systems, power consumption/Green AI;
• taking into account compliance checking aspects, e.g. ethics by design, confidentiality protection, federated learning;
• data, model and software quality assurance and standards;
• legal aspects such as accountability and IPR issues.

*** TOPICS OF INTEREST ***
With this workshop we would like to stimulate the interdisciplinary discourse between the involved science and engineering disciplines, above all;
a) theoreticians (machine learning, mathematicians) with focus on performance guarantees, model selection, robustness, model analysis, etc.,
b) application experts posing application requirements on AI system engineering in terms of basic implementation hurdles facing existing or anticipated standards as well as usability, acceptance
c) engineering ML systems (DevOps, Software Engineering) with focus on system maintenance, testing and standards, and
d) law experts for accountability and IPR protection issues;

*** SUBMISSION GUIDELINES ***
In order to encourage participation and discussion, this workshop solicits two types of submissions - regular papers and short papers:
- Regular paper submissions about original work not exceeding 10 pages.
- Short paper submissions on recent or ongoing work on relevant topics and ideas not exceeding 5 pages.

Online Papers Submission: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=aisys2021

*** REVIEW PROCESS ***
Submissions to the workshop must not have been published or be concurrently considered for publication elsewhere.
All submissions will be peer-reviewed by, at least, 3 reviewers and judged on the basis of originality, contribution to the field,
technical and presentation quality, and relevance to the workshop.
Short papers are meant for timely discussion and feedback at the workshop.

*** ACCEPTED PAPERS ***
All accepted papers will be published by Springer in "Communications in Computer and Information Science (CCIS).  Authors of all accepted papers must sign a Springer copyright release form. Papers are accepted with the understanding that at least one author will register for the conference to present the paper. All published papers will be indexed appropriately in all major indexes.
